Joe's Goals - Free Online Habit Tracker
Joe's Goals - Free Online Habit Tracker - I've been thinking a lot lately about how to acheive more success in life. I've sort of broken it down to three areas:

1) Decide upon your goal(s) - Maybe it's your physical fitness, your personal life, financial, your career, etc... Decide what it is you want to acheive.
2) Determine what you need to do in order to get there - Exercise, learn a new skill, invest time with friends/family, save money, whatever. If you're unable to figure out how to acheive your goal, use the web as a resource, read self-help articles, get a book from the library, talk to friends, etc.
3) Do it - This, for me, is always the hardest part - how to do enforce the discipline in your day-to-day life to keep yourself on track? I'm working on this one, and already have a few ideas that have worked well for me:
- Take part in a competition - the cardio competition I've been in has been a great help, keeping me on the treadmill and at the gym
- Daily reminders / write a letter - write a note, stick it in your wallet, read it every day, write this letter to the 'you of the future', with a set of rules to follow, talk about how you feel and reminder yourself of your goals and how you're going to acheive them on a day to day basis
- Record your progress - track your progress, don't get discouraged when you mess up, get right back on the bike and try harder. Keep a journal with notes on how you're doing, what is challenging you, or keeping you from achieving your goals, come up with solutions to these problems.

Anyhow, along the lines of point #3, I made my own little Excel spreadsheet to track my own goals, and then googled today and found the 'Joe's Goals' site, you can sign up there, note in good/bad habits and track them. Interesting, I think I'll stick w/ my Excel one for now, as it's a little more elaborate, but if this works for you, then cool!

Sentient Developments: Must-know terms for the 21st Century intellectual: Redux
Sentient Developments: Must-know terms for the 21st Century intellectual: Redux - Absolutely Brilliant article... Make 15 minutes in your day sometime over the next week and read this article... If this doesn't fill you with the same sort of passion and excitement about what the future holds, and/or help you to start to believe the stuff I've been evangelizing over the past year or so, then I don't know what will... It's all coming together, it's all going to change... Hang on, it's going to be a very cool century!

Did you get something for Christmas that you don't really need?

I did... My wonderful wife bought me a watch, I've been wearing a beat-up old Timex Ironman Triathlon for about 10 years now... Anyhow, the band had broken (the second or third replacement), and so she figured it was time for a new one. Well I'm just too darned attached to this old watch, it's got everything I need... So I returned the new watch to Sears over the weekend, got a new replacement watchband ($10) and wasn't sure what I wanted to do with the leftover money.

We already sponsor a child through Foster Parents plan, so from time to time we get mailings from the organization... We rec'd one recently called the Gifts of Hope 2006/2007 catalogue, it features a variety of 'gifts' that can be purchased that can really make a difference in the lives of people less fortunate than us...

So I decided that I really don't NEED anything, certainly not in the context that people living in third world countries NEED something... So tonight I hopped online and in about 5 minutes, using money left-over from my returned watch I bought a goat for a family in Zambia... Goats bring immediate health improvements to the entire family. The essential proteins severely lacking in the family's diet are abundant in the goat's milk. By selling surplus milk, the family gains additional income for school and healthcare. $40...

So if you received something for Christmas that you don't really want or need, why not return it and provide something that someone else in the world really does need instead?

  Polar Bear Dip 2007

Took part in the Courage Brothers Polar Bear Dip in Oakville earlier today... What a fantastic way to start the year... The weather was much nicer this year than last, a downright balmy 9 degrees, water temperature was around 4 degrees... Over $40,000 was raised for water projects in Senegal, a great cause, good times!

I think a lot. Some people say I think too much... However, I don't want to be seen as being aloof or pretentious, it's just that I really enjoy philosophical questions and deep thoughts. That's not to say that I don't find pleasure in more down-to-earth or trivial things, like beer and soccer :) I'm happily married with 3 wonderful children. I'm a partner in a technology services company based in Toronto. Myers Briggs says I'm an ENTJ
